If you like chess, you'll love "Chess in the Round"TM . Don't be a square chess player anymore! Liberate Yourself! Play "Chess in the Round"TM an exciting new circular chess game. You'll no longer have your back against the wall, but you can attack and be attacked from the rear. This makes a great gift for you or the chess players you know.

But beware, it is not a game for smug traditionalists that know it all! Then again it is just as rigorous as standard chess (hereafter called square chess) since all the normal chess rules apply. Many variations of chess exist and are fun to play, but they lack the true feeling of chess that players try so hard to develop. In "Chess in the Round"TM everything you know about king's pawn opening and queen's pawn opening, endgames etc. are still relevant, but with new twists. Bishops execute graceful spirals, Rooks are in orbit, the Queen is in her glory, and the Pawns have had a population explosion! Can you resist "Chess in the Round"TM?

This is a brand new real (not cyber) game with a 24" x 24" heavy vinyl roll-up game board, two full sets of Staunton style plastic pieces, a decorated black storage/mailing tube, and illustrated instructions. These instructions are "lite" and assume that you already know how to play standard chess.

A Checkmate Position - White Wins!

(hint: understand the power of the white rook)

The Story Behind "Chess in the Round"

My game "Chess in the Round" evolved from three friends sitting in a circle with much beer and a chess board between each of them, playing three standard chess games simultaneously (each player was playing the other two at the same time). This is a highly recommended and enjoyable activity (beer optional) and was great endless fun partly because all three games never finished at the same time! My first idea was to combine all three boards. It was the seed of the design. This turned into a gigantic set, with three sets for three players. A big idea was doubling the pawns. The first board was much larger, but I didn't like the game because plotting developed between the players - two would "gang up" on the third and eliminate the weaker one first - definitely not chess, more like politics... So I condensed it for two players trying to keep the feeling as close to normal chess as possible. Many other chess game variants exist and are fun to play, but they tend to lose that rigorous feeling of chess that players try so hard to develop. "Chess in the Round" is really standard chess in a new environment.
